Flush of success
Loitering around a public toilet would normally invoke the wrath of the law, but there is one very special place in Northland where a visit to the bathroom is not all about business - the Fredrick Hundertwasser inspired Kawakawa toilets.
The conveniences were designed and built by internationally known Austrian artist and architect Frederick Hundertwasser, who first visited Northland in 1970, and eventually adopted the region as his home. Hundertwasser designs using a recognisable style which features curved lines, recycled bottles, ceramic pots, and the use of plants and trees. The Gaudi styled project has seen the town façade change as businesses adopt Hundertwasser styles, and has significantly boosted the town’s economy due to an increase of tourists. The toilets were awarded the prestigious Golden Plunger award - a world wide search for the best public toilets as voted by the travelling public.
