Gumboot Culture

Gumboot Day is Taihape’s annual gumboot throwing festival held each November in the central North Island of New Zealand. Gumboots are Kiwi-speak for galoshes, Wellingtons or waders.

The aim of the festival is to break the world record for the longest gumboot throw. The festival highlights the rural lifestyle of a country renowned worldwide for its agricultural products.

The event has been running since 1985 and competition regulations include details of the boot’s height, weight, size and length. Gumboot throwers range from five year olds to the over 50s.

Gumboots can also be tossed skyward on any day of the year in the official gumboot throwing lane located behind the town’s main shopping centre.
