Leading Choreographer

Acclaimed dancer and choreographer Michael Parmenter was awarded the New Zealand Order of Merit for his contribution to dance.  Last year he completed a tour of a commissioned work for the Royal New Zealand Ballet called 'Empty Chairs' in which he took the audience through the wild ride of the creative process.  New Zealand's best known contemporary dance company, Footnote, performed a retrospective of his work in 2002.  Parmenter has been invited to present 'Empty Chairs' at the 11th International Conference on Thinking in Arizona in July 2003.  In 1990, Parmenter became the first high-profile New Zealander to acknowledge his HIV status.  He has battled cancer and AIDS, and is one of the longest surviving AIDS patients in the country.
