Great Lines in Literature
In Maori mythology, the story goes that Maori god Maui hooked the North Island out of the sea from his waka (canoe), the South Island. That, and the fact that New Zealand is surrounded by ocean and criss-crossed with rivers and lakes, make it little wonder that fishing has featured so much in New Zealand storytelling. In August 2001, publishing company Random House released a collection of New Zealand short stories about fishing called 'Spinning a Line', edited by New Zealand short story writer Owen Marshall. The anthology includes 38 stories and poems by eminent Kiwi writers including Keri Hulme, Brian Turner, Patricia Grace, Kevin Ireland and James K Baxter.
