Fruit Wine Plentiful
Winemakers make good use of all of New Zealand's fruit, not just grapes. Fruit wines and liqueurs are gaining in popularity and quality. They include wines and liqueurs made from kiwifruit, feijoa, apple, pear, boysenberry and blueberry. The Fruit Winemakers Association was formed in 1987 to promote excellence in fruit winemaking and help direct an industry rich in potential.
In October each year the annual International Fruit Wine and Cider Competition is held. Categories at the competition are table wine (9-14 percent alcohol); fortified wines and liqueurs (14-23 percent); cider and coolers (8.6 percent max); other fruit wine products (disguised and flavoured fruit wines); alcohol products containing non-fermented fruit juice (14+ percent).
The award-winning Prenzel distillery in Marlborough produces a delicious range of fruit schnapps and liqueurs, while Sentry Hill Winery in Taranaki has all sorts of fruit wine, cider and cordials. There are at least 20 other commercial fruit winemakers around New Zealand.
