Olive and Avocado Innovation

New Zealand produces excellent olive oil from locally grown olives. These come from the Pinder Estate in Marlborough, the Canterbury area of the South Island, and Rakino Island, near Auckland.

Top-quality oil prepared from avocadoes is also becoming popular and is made from avocadoes grown in Kerikeri in the north and Katikati in the Bay of Plenty.

An award-winning organic olive oil producer in Kerikeri (northern North Island) won a major business award in 2001 for its venture. Olivado New Zealand Ltd produces premium, extra virgin, cold-pressed oil extracted from avocado. The company also produces macadamia oil and is now extending to the production of olive oil, having planted a 30-acre olive grove with a production plant on State Highway 10, the main route to Cape Reinga, the northern-most point of New Zealand and a popular tourist attraction.
