The Oldest and Newest Wineries - a World Apart
In 2001, Mission Estate Winery celebrated 150 years of winemaking using techniques brought to New Zealand by French Catholic missionaries. The Hawke's Bay region’s largest independent winery, Mission Estate produces wines known for their structure, flavour, delicacy and intensity.
At the other end of the scale, Craggy Range Winery is one of the new breed, having released its first wines in 1999. The winery sets a new standard with its beautiful plantings and architecturally impressive buildings, and was developed by Steve Smith in conjunction with the Peabody family.
