Screwcap Wines

The romance of corked wine is giving way to the desire for 100 percent quality, with the development of screw-capping instead of corking wine bottles. An organisation called ‘Screwcap Closure Initiative’ was started by Marlborough producers John Stichbury (Jackson Estate), Ross Lawson (Lawson’s Dry Hills), John Forrest (Forrest Estate) and John Belsham (Foxes Island).

Prominent names in New Zealand wine are espousing the benefits of a corkless bottle. These include award-winning Michael Brajkovich, Master of Wine and winemaker for Kumeu River Wines. Brajkovich will use screwcaps on all his wines, except for those exported to the US. Well-known Master of Wine Bob Campbell is marketing the screwcap concept globally.

New Zealand winemakers who use screwcaps are Allan Scott, Cairnbrae Vineyards, Clifford Bay Estate, Craggy Range, Firstland Vineyards, Forrest Estate, Foxes Island, Framingham Wine, Gibbston Valley, Giesen Wine Estate, Goldwater Estate, Jackson Estate, Kim Crawford, Kumeu River, Lawson's Dry Hills, Neudorf, Palliser Estate, Riverby Estate, Seresin Estate, Te Whare Ra, Trinity Hill, Villa Maria, Wairau River, Wither Hills and Woollaston Estates.
