Pacific Rhythms

Pacific Island music is an important part of the New Zealand music scene and a growing number of PI artists are making their names known.  Performers such as Che Fu, Teremoana Rapley, King Kapisi, Pauly Fuemana and OMC (whose single 'How Bizarre' went to No.1 in eight countries), rapster Ermehn and Nesian Mystik all infuse Polynesian rhythms and language into their work.  Che Fu and the Krates won six awards at the 2002 NZ Music Awards.  Television shows like Tangata Pasifika, Mai Time, Squeeze and m2, and radio stations like 531PI and Mai FM, serve to help promote PI artists.  Phil Fuemana's record label Urban Pacifika Records (UPR) concentrates solely on Pacific Island artists.
