The famous haka
The haka performed by the New Zealand rugby team, the All Blacks, is renowned worldwide. However it is not the only haka - there are various forms of haka and many iwi (tribe) have their own individual haka. The All Blacks' haka - 'Ka Mate' - is said to have been written by famous Maori chief Te Rauparaha. The haka was first performed by the New Zealand rugby team in 1888-89 on its tour of Britain. It is thought that it was the Ka Mate version. Later, in 1905, 'The Originals' toured Britain and became known as the All Blacks. This was the first time a team known as the All Blacks performed the haka. It became a permanent feature of the All Blacks' pre-game challenge from then on.
