The Te Houtaewa Challenge
The legend of Te Houtaewa is relived every year by northern Maori tribes. According to Maori legend, Te Houtaewa was the fastest athlete of the northern Maori tribes and outran his enemies along 90 Mile Beach.
Today his feat is marked by the annual Te Houtaewa Challenge. In March each year, athletes from around the world gather to compete in the ultra marathon and half marathon at 90 Mile Beach in the Far North of New Zealand.
The event also combines with the Te Houtaewa Arts and Crafts, and Food Festivals. The Arts and Crafts Festival celebrates traditional Maori art forms including ta moko (tattoo), whakairo (wood, stone and bone carving), raranga (weaving), pottery and painting.
