Legendary soprano
Acclaimed soprano Dame Kiri Te Kanawa was born on March 6, 1944, and made her international debut at Covent Garden in 1971. She is New Zealand's best-known operatic voice and one of the leading international sopranos of her generation. One of her career highlights was singing at the 1981 wedding of Prince Charles and Princess Diana at St Paul's Cathedral in front of an audience of 750 million worldwide. On the morning of 1 January 2000, at the dawning of the new millennium, her concert with the New Zealand Symphony Orchestra on Gisborne Beach was broadcast live to 55 countries and attracted over one billion people, the largest live television audience in history. At the Queen's Golden Jubilee concert on 1 June 2002, Dame Kiri sang an aria from Mozart's Marriage of Figaro and Gershwin's 'Summertime' from Porgy and Bess. In recent years she has been reducing the number of performances she gives.
