New eco tourism venture for Whangaroa
Botanist and guru of New Zealand foliage, Tony Foster, has set up a new venture
tucked in a special corner of Northland, giving overseas visitors a unique first-hand
experience of New Zealand’s plant life.
The western arm of Whangaroa Harbour is an isolated hotspot of bio-diversity
which has helped to create an area rich in rare, native plants. Tony moved to
Totara North fifteen years ago and soon realised the uniqueness of his surroundings,
feeling a strong desire to showcase its diversity.
Previously Tony has owned and operated a native plant nursery and has taught
biology and horticulture. He is now sharing his extensive knowledge of the Northland’s
coastal forest by providing a two hour guided walk from Totara North through the
bush to Lane Cove in the outer reaches of the harbour. Along the way people can
also enjoy towering cliffs, waterfalls and and kumara gardens (sweet potato grown
by New Zealand’s indigenous Maori). There’s also a boat trip where people can
view the volcanic outcrops which characterise Whangaroa Harbour.
