Weaver Edna Pahewa carries on the family tradition

Edna Pahewa has weaving in her veins. She is the daughter of the internationally renowned Master Weaver Emily Schuster, so weaving was always been a part of her life. As a child, if Edna wasn’t weaving with her mother, she was being taught by her skilled aunties and Emily’s acquaintances.

Emily Schuster founded the weaving school as Tumu Raranga (Master Weaver) at the New Zealand Maori Art and Crafts Institute, now known as Te Puia, in Rotorua. The mantle of Tumu Raranga was then handed to Edna after the death of her twin sister.

Edna has years of weaving experience including teaching at Te Whare Wananga o Aotearoa (a Maori tertiary provider), in Tokoroa. She is currently the Tumu Raranga at Te Puia, and is also the Chairperson for the Te Roopu Raranga Whatu o Aotearoa national weavers collective.

Edna has demonstrated and taught the art of raranga (weaving) throughout New Zealand and Australia. She represented the weaving group at the three main exhibition venues that hosted The Eternal Thread, the first touring exhibition of Maori weaving that included both ancient and contemporary pieces.

Edna is of Te Arawa, Tuwharetoa, Tuhourangi, Ngati Wahiao and Ngati Umutahi tribal affiliations.
