Other Perfectly Natural Activities
The Auckland area features many beautiful bush walks. The Waitakere Ranges in West Auckland is a spectacular wilderness on the edge of the city. There are 250kms of walking and tramping tracks, waterfalls, untouched native forest, unique wildlife and, on the West Coast, black sand beaches with wild surf at Muriwai, Piha and Bethels. The scenery may be familiar to Xena and Hercules fans - the TV series was filmed in the area. One company, Bush and Beach, provides full and half day tours that include the rainforest areas of the Waitakere Ranges and its coastline, a chance to experience Maori culture and a visit to the gannet colony at Muriwai Beach. There’s also a trip to the magnificent Karekare beach, made famous through the piano scene in the Academy Award-winning movie The Piano (starring Anna Paquin). The wilderness experience can be extended by staying overnight in a luxury lodge.
