Kapiti Island alive

An island totally free of all introduced predators, Kapiti is home to rare birds such as little spotted kiwi, kakako, saddleback and stichbird.

Visitors are able to experience uncontrolled natural forest regeneration with its accompanying wildlife.

Kapiti’s adjoining marine reserve provides a unique mix of protected marine and land environments.

For over 800 years Kapiti has been inhabited by people. Their history survives today through the stories and legends told by their ancestors, and through historical sites and artefacts.

Many tribal groups have left their marks on Kapiti Island during a long and colourful history as well as European interest from Captain James Cook, foreign trading ships, commercial whalers and immigrant farmers.

Interpretation of the flora and fauna, and local history and customs is delivered by local Maori guides.
