Eco-Tourism at its Best: Whale Watch, Kaikoura
The seaside settlement of Kaikoura is situated on the East Coast of the South Island, between Christchurch and Picton. The town is one of the leading nature tourism destinations in the country, best known for its whale-watching tours. The company works closely with New Zealand’s Department of Conservation and has set a global standard in eco-tourism. Whale Watch Kaikoura is a community trust owned by the Maori people of Kaikoura in partnership with their affiliated tribal people, the Ngai Tahu. The resident sperm whales are the main attraction in Kaikoura, but other cetaceous visitors to the area include the humpback, minke, blue, fin, sei, killer, beaked and pilot whales. The humpback passes through Kaikoura on its annual pilgrimage to Antarctic waters to feed.
