Rivercam: An angler's secret weapon

Located on the Tongariro River, River Birches is a five star, secluded, boutique fishing lodge that offers anglers the chance to bring back fish for dinner every time with the help of a Rivercam.

The Rivercam is operated via the River Birches website, allowing anglers to survey the river's conditions. The Rivercam maintains a clear view of the hydro pool and is updated every 30 minutes with weather details including temperature, wind direction and wind speed.

River Birches Manager Chris Wright keeps the fishing shed well stocked with tackle for anglers, while his wife, Chef Marilyn Wright, will cook the catch on the angler's return.

The fishing lodge reopened its doors in 2006 after extensive renovations. Left untouched by the renovations were the Birches swing bridge and 75 year old silver birch trees. The three-room luxury lodge is situated within an established garden and only a fly fisher's throw from one of the river's most famous pools.

The lodge is also near Turangi at the southern end of Lake Taupo and is close to other natural attractions like Tongariro National Park, Tongariro Crossing and Mount Ruapehu.
