Traditional treatments thrive in modern day
The Polynesian Spa in Rotorua is a good example of a tourist location that adapts with the times. Once a simple spa known as the 'Great Spa of the South Seas', these days it's the perfect venue to alleviate the stresses of the modern condition. The spa opened its Lake Spa Retreat in response to the demand for more modern, holistic attitudes to health and relaxation. The Retreat has eight therapy rooms and offers treatments ranging from half-hour massages right through to 90 minute spa treatments.
Hell's Gate and Wai Ora Spa at Tikitere in Rotorua has two deep bathing mud pools. The two pools (one for two people, one for four) are around a metre deep, with temperatures between 36 and 40 degrees Celsius. Mud bathers spend about 15 minutes in the pool, then have a cold shower to close up the skin's pores, then a spa. The mud pool concept has always been popular with Maori, particularly with men after the wars, and women for beauty. The creator of Hell's Gate's pools made them after he noticed people were trying to sit in the mud foot pools at the facility.
