Choices at Queen Charlotte
To walk or to bike? Tent or hotel? Short walk or long? Guided or unguided? There are a range of choices to be made by walkers on the Queen Charlotte Track. The Queen Charlotte Track, in the Marlborough Sounds, is a 71km walking track passing through lush coastal forest, around coves and inlets, and along skyline ridges offering breathtaking views.
Walkers generally arrive at Queen Charlotte Sound via Picton, a small town in the Marlborough Sounds at the top of the South Island. Most people start their walk at Ship Cove, which must be reached by boat organised in Picton. The Queen Charlotte Track can be broken up into sections of short walks, or hikers can walk the entire track in three to five days.
Accommodation on the track caters for all, from Department of Conservation campsites to cabins, motels and luxury lodges and hotels. There are no rubbish bins on the track so all rubbish must be taken out by those using the area. Mountain biking is also permitted on the track.
