Whirinaki Forest

Long before Europeans came to Aotearoa New Zealand, Whirinaki Forest has special significance to the early Maori iwi (tribes) of Te Urewera. They depended on this land for kai (food) and rongoa (medicine). From this land, the tangata whenua (original people of the land) drew their wairua (spirituality).

The Whirinaki Escape guided day walk gives visitors a ‘window look’ into how the Maori of Te Urewera once interacted with the land and how they retain their links with this valued taonga (treasure) to this day. The natural features and resources are highlighted by way of flora and fauna interpretation. Guides provide a glimpse of the rich history and heritage of the area. Stories are shared in the spirit of manaakitanga (hospitality).
