Sir Edmund Hillary
1919 - 2008
Sir Edmund Hillary was New Zealand's greatest hero. The tall, gangly beekeeper seized world headlines when he and Tenzing Norgay, on 29 May 1953, became the first to scale the summit of Mount Everest. He died on 11 January 2008, aged 88.
Sir Ed - as New Zealanders knew him - never forgot that he reached the summit with Tenzing. He devoted his life to fundraising to improve the health, education and environment of Nepal's Sherpa people.
In this video, Sir Edmund Hillary talks about New Zealand, mountaineering and his Everest ascent.

Matariki - Maori New Year
Matariki is one of New Zealand's most ancient celebrations. It is the time of year when New Zealand's Maori people mark the end of one year and the beginning of another.
Matariki - a cluster of stars that appears in the skies above Aotearoa in late May / early June - is the time to celebrate harvest's end, prepare the land for planting, renew associations with family and friends, reflect on the past and set goals for the future.
