Waimarama Maori Tourism
45 Gillies Crescent,
Waimarama,
Havelock North
A rare, guided opportunity to explore ancestral land carefully protected by the local Maori people. The area was home to up to 5,000 Maori as far back as the 14th century and the hill fortress ‘Te Hakakino’ protected the people when they were invaded. You'll see native eels in their natural wetland habitat, and one species is found only in the North Island of New Zealand.
The tour focuses on sharing with you what it was like for our people to exist here hundreds of years ago, how they lived, worked and played and presenting and describing traditional activities practiced then as they are now. The local people, magnificent views, awe-inspiring scenery, native bush and history of the area never cease to amaze those who visit.
