When you’re in the ‘information gathering’ phase of holiday planning, New Zealand websites can provide an endless stream of facts, figures and itinerary ideas. It’s often a good idea to get a detailed map of the country (hard copy), so that you can build a clear picture of where things are and how you might move between destinations. A comprehensive travel guide, such as Lonely Planet, can also help you to make smart decisions about where to go and what to see.

Once you arrive in New Zealand, free travel guides can be found at airports, hotels, motels and information centres. If you’re planning to do a lot of driving, the AA (Automobile Association) produces an excellent series of road maps that cover the entire country.

Each time you arrive in a new town or city, look for an information centre. It only takes a few minutes to load up with stacks of brochures, free maps and valuable local knowledge.
