Eugene Onegin
17 Sep 2009  - 26 Sep 2009

Eugene Onegin
Honour, love, death and regret are the powerful themes of Pyotr Illyich Tchaikovsky's great opera, Eugene Onegin.

Set in 19th-century Russia and based on Alexander Pushkin's novel, Eugene Onegin has all the opulence and grandeur of the era and packs a dramatic and visual punch.

The ball scene in Act III is one of opera's most magnificent and sumptuous creations - a perfect snapshot of life amongst St Petersburg's wealthy elite. This production captures the essence of that priviledged world in all its glory and despair.

In the end, Onegin is what Tchaikovsky himself called 'a superfluous man'. Money, it seems, can't buy you love.

A dynamic national and international cast and creative team have been secured to deliver an unforgettable night at the opera. In her debut with the NBR New Zealand Opera, rising star soprano Anna Leese will star as Tatyana alongside the UK's William Dazeley in the title role. Dazeley is one of the leading baritones of his generation.

Sung in Russian with English subtitles.
