Mark Adams: Te Wairoa~Clandon Park - Tene Waitere’s travels
The McNamara Gallery presents a new exhibition of photographs by Mark Adams, on display from 6th - 27th November 2009.

In 1886 the eruption of mount Tarawera buried Hinemihi at Te Wairoa ~The Buried Village.

Hinemihi nevertheless survived and sheltered people including Tene Waitere, who with Wero Taroi, carved the house.

The governor general Lord Onslow purchased Hinemihi from her Tuhourangi owners and re-erected her in the grounds of his home at Clandon Park in Surrey.

Photographs by Mark Adams which are reproduced in the book 'Rauru' by Nicholas Thomas, Mark Adams, James Schuster & Lyonel Grant.
