7x10: Akiko Diegel
17 Oct 2009  - 06 Dec 2009

7x10: Akiko Diegel
Akiko Diegal uses seemingly inappropriate materials to make simple everyday objects. In doing so, she questions how fragile materials can be applied in art practice and what this symbolises for art.

7x10 consists of a grid of stacked up blankets that have been cut and stitched into shopping bags. Her installation refers to the comforts of shopping – the activity itself, rather than the acquisition of products, by extolling the warm soothing pleasures of consumerism and the addictive joys of spending. It also critiques, suggesting buyers are like babies, with their shopping bags serving as security blankets.

Japanese-born Diegal lives and works in Auckland, where she completed a Masters of Fine Arts from The University of Auckland’s Elam School of Fine Arts in 2008. Diegal was a finalist in the 2007 Waikato Contemporary Art Award.
