Immediately south of Okarito Lagoon is the Westland National Park, part of the Southwest New Zealand World Heritage Area. The park extends west from the highest peaks of the Southern Alps all the way to the coast. It's an area blessed with snow-capped mountains, glaciers, forests, tussock grasslands, coast, lakes, rivers and wetlands.

In the eastern area of the park, mountain ranges rise sharply and their dense native forests are interrupted only by deep, impassable ravines. The forests eventually give way to alpine grasses and high altitude permanent snow cover. In a couple of places, huge tongues of ice extend all the way back down to near sea level - this is glacier country.

In contrast, the western area of the park is made up of forest covered fertile river plains, dissected by meandering river flows that feed numerous lakes and coastal lagoons. The water in these rivers and lakes is an amazing dark brown colour, the result of naturally decaying plant material from the forest floor. The darkness of the water means the lake surfaces make wonderful mirrors. Lake Matheson and the larger Lake Mapourika flawlessly reflect the surrounding forests and distant snow covered mountains. Excellent kayaking adventures can be enjoyed on the rivers, lakes and coastal lagoons.

The mountains of the Southern Alps are revered by the local Maori people (the Ngai Tahu tribe) as their ancestors. The whole coastal environment is also of considerable importance to these people, both spiritually and for the food and resources it provides.

There are numerous walks in the area, through lush native rainforests and along pristine river valleys. Easy walks lead to the base of the stunning Fox and Franz Josef glaciers. For experienced hikers and mountaineers, a truly wonderful world awaits in the mountains of the park. Nearer the coast, the Okarito Trig Track (one hour return) begins at the town of Okarito and involves a steep climb to magnificent views south and inland across the Westland National Park. From the same town, a three hour return walk to the peaceful Three Mile Lagoon passes along the beach at low tide or through the forest on a well-formed track.
