Mt. John astronomical observatory is open to the public for guided tours during the day. It is the southern most observatory on the earth. From the summit you can enjoy 360 degree of view. A guide will point a telescope to a bright star or two when sky is clear. Please enjoy day time stargazing.
Mt. John observatory is located on the western side of a beautiful lake Tekapo. It's only takes 18 minutes drive from Lake Tekapo village. Off from the highway 8 to Godley Peak Road and about 4km from the turn off you will see a sign "Mt. John Observatory"
There is an all glass Astro Cafe open during the day on the summit.
