The Qualmark system is made up of two distinct parts:
  • Accommodation star grading
  • Endorsement for activities, transport, visitor services and tour operators

All Qualmark businesses are assessed on environmental practices. Businesses that perform to a high standard in this area can display a Qualmark Green ‘Enviro’ logo too. Find out more information on Qualmark Green here

Accommodation

Broken into eight categories each with its own criteria. These include:

Backpackers - including budget "shared" accommodation in a hostel, lodge or 'hotels'.

Guest and Hosted - incorporates bed and breakfasts, farm and home stays, guest houses, boutique lodges, inns, country hotels and similar establishments providing "home-like" or "character" accommodation.

Holiday Home - including serviced holiday cottages to luxurious lodges

Holiday Parks - including camping grounds and motor camps. All properties provide communal kitchens, toilets, showers and laundries.

Hotels - includes properties with at least one licensed bar and restaurant on the premises or adjacent, with charge-back facilities.

Self Contained and Serviced - including motels, motor lodges, serviced apartments and serviced holiday cottages.

Student Accommodation - including Tertiary-level student accommodations provided by Universities and Polytechnics. Also eligible for this category is accommodation provided by other alternative tertiary education providers.

Exclusive - is for luxury accommodation and does not have a star grade. Exclusive is only awarded to the finest of properties that have already achieved a very high five star grade and met additional criteria.

Within each of these categories (except exclusive), each property is star graded:

Applied For

This indicates the property is undergoing assessment for grading.


Endorsement

  • Qualmark endorsement is applied across four categories:
    • Transport
    • Activities
    • Tour operators
    • Visitor services
  • Endorsement logo identifies a tourism business has met or exceeded accepted tourism industry quality standards
  • Qualmark endorsed businesses identify professional and trustworthy experiences
  • Endorsement does not include a star grading.

Qualmark Green

  • Qualmark Green is enhanced environmental criteria and includes assessment in areas of:
    • Waste management
    • Energy and water efficiency
    • Environmental conservation
    • Community support
  • If a property scores well in this area they can apply to display a Qualmark Green ‘Enviro’ logo.
  • Depending on the level of environmental business practices (variety and amount), one of the three green ‘Enviro’ logos is awarded; ‘Enviro-Gold’, ‘Enviro-Silver’ or ‘Enviro-Bronze’.
