Road - Self Drive

Driving distances and times to and from and around the Dunedin region:

These times are based on driving at 80 to 100 km (50 to 60 miles) per hour on open stretches of road, with a small allowance for traffic delays, petrol stops and refreshments.

Driving Routes

Southern Scenic Route

This route links Coastal Otago and Southland regions providing an alternative route to get to Milford Sound. Traditional route is inland via Mt Cook and Queenstown.

From Queenstown

Visitors can access Dunedin from Queenstown via a number of roads that run through the Central Otago region. A suggested stop in one the small Central Otago towns is highly recommended - Cromwell, Clyde, Alexandra. See later for activities in the area.

From Christchurch

There are two routes that travellers can take when travelling between Christchurch and Dunedin. Either travel inland via Mt Cook or follow State Highway One south along the coast through Timaru and onward to Dunedin.

Air Services

Air New Zealand and Pacific Blue offer scheduled domestic services to and from Dunedin, which can be booked on their websites: www.airnewzealand.co.nz, www.flypacificblue.co.nz

Pacific Blue offer direct trans tasman flights to and from Brisbane three times a week. www.pacificblue.co.nz

Dunedin - Auckland via Christchurch 2 hours 45 minutes

These are approximate flying times, including connection times, and will differ depending on the airline and type of aircraft used.

Getting to and from the airport

  • Distance: 30 kilometres, roughly a 30 minute drive
  • Cost of taxi to city centre: approximately $55-60
  • Shuttle: The fare can vary from $15 to $60 depending on how many people are in the shuttle at any one time.

Coach Services

InterCity Coachlines has a nationwide network that includes a scheduled service to the Otago region. Daily bus services from/to Dunedin include Christchurch, Timaru, Oamaru, Invercargill, Te Anau & Queenstown.
