Exploring from Taranaki:
Waitomo Caves
2.5 hours drive north of New Plymouth enroute to Auckland. The Waitomo Caves were formed over 30 million years ago, and drip by drip they’re still changing. The natural beauty of stalactites and stalagmites lit by the blue light of glow worms has to be seen to be believed.
Ruapehu district
3.5 hours east of New Plymouth. The 800 square kilometre Tongariro National Park (a World Heritage Area) is the centre of attraction for this region. Getting there: via the Forgotten Highway or via Wanganui.
