Resources for travel sellers who sell New Zealand

Section One

This section lists the requirements for visas and passports, restricted items that must not be brought into New Zealand and taxes that must be paid when departing from New Zealand airports.

Passport Requirements

All visitors to New Zealand must carry a passport that is valid for at least 3 months beyond the date of intended departure from New Zealand.

Visa Requirements

For Tour Guides

If you are travelling with a group of visitors and acting as a tour guide or a tour leader in a co-ordination role, you require a work visa.

All Tour Guides must obtain work visas, prior to their arrival in New Zealand.

For Tourists:

Passport holders from more than 50 countries do not require a Visitor's Visa for stays less than 3 months. For further information on visa requirements, visit www.immigration.govt.nz

Visa Waivers

Those travellers, who do not require a Visitor's Visa for stays less than 3 months, do require:

  • A passport that is valid for at least 3 months after departure from New Zealand
  • An onward or return ticket to a country that the visitor has permission to enter
  • Sufficient money for the duration of the stay - approximately NZ$1000 per month per person

Provision of Immigration Advice

If you provide New Zealand immigration advice to your clients, you may need a licence from the New Zealand Immigration Authority. To find out if you need to apply for a licence please visit the Immigration Advisers Authority website.

Restricted items

New Zealand is an island nation and has not been exposed to some pests and diseases that exist in other countries. Many goods such as food, plant and wooden products, must not be brought to New Zealand. These types of items carry a threat from pests and disease. Information about what must be declared as Customs to determine whether it is restricted or prohibited is available here. Departure Taxes from New Zealand Airports

An international departure tax fee exists for those passengers flying out of New Zealand and generally costs NZ$25 per international adult passenger, except for Auckland and Christchurch Airports where the tax is incorporated into the international ticket. For more information, visit
