Matariki - celebrating harvest and Maori 'new year' planting, Hawke’s Bay

Scallop Festival, Whitianga - coinciding with the beginning of the scallop season, this is a seafood focused festival with entertainment throughout the day. www.scallopfestival.co.nz

Gisborne Food and Wine Festival - array of wines and food from the Poverty Bay region spread over a number of venues. Buses run all day between venues. www.gisbornenz.com

November

Tauranga Garden and Artfest - a bi-annual event held on Labour weekend (late October/early November) which alternates with the Tauranga Arts Festival. A range of the region’s superb gardens is open for viewing, combined with a selection of visual art. www.gardenandartfest.co.nz

Pohutukawa Festival - an event that celebrates the native Pohutukawa tree, New Zealand’s own Christmas tree. Festival activity takes place around the Coromandel. www.pohutukawafestival.com
