These times are for driving at 80 to 100 km (50 to 60 miles) per hour on open stretches, with a small allowance for traffic delays, petrol stops and refreshments.

Driving Routes

To Hawke’s Bay

  • Follow the Pacific Coast Highway around the East Cape from the Bay of Plenty. An overnight stop is recommended as the distance is long between Tauranga and Gisborne or
  • Tauranga to Gisborne via the Waioeka Gorge - a "short cut" to the Hawke’s Bay taking approximately 4 hours and 15minutes.

There are good stretches for trout fishing and plenty of ideal spots for picnicking, swimming and camping. Numerous well-signposted bush walks of various lengths are available.

From Rotorua

A very rustic road, partly unsealed journey from Rotorua through the Urewera National Park past Lake Waikaremona to Wairoa in Eastland.
