Southern Lakes Region

Introduction

Queenstown, Lake Wanaka and Fiordland are collectively marketed as Southern Lakes and are the focus of this module. Queenstown and Wanaka are resort towns located close to Fiordland, which is one of New Zealand’s most remote regions. Together these destinations are diverse and physically beautiful, stretching from golden hill country across rugged mountains to the wild coast.

Key Centres

  • Queenstown - the main population centre of this area is Queenstown and is often referred to as the "Adventure Capital" of New Zealand.
  • Wanaka - a beautiful lakeside resort town with Mount Aspiring National Park nearby.
  • Te Anau - a base for exploring Fiordland National Park.
