The Last Post Café, with owner and Head Chef Jeff Nowell at the helm.
The cuisine of the Last Post Café is best described as contemporary
Jeff is an experienced Canadian trained chef, living and working in New Zealand for the over 20 years, mostly in Methven.
Cooking Après Ski menus in Thredbo, Australia was Jeff’s first taste of a winter ski village and got him hooked.
“It was cool skiing in between gum trees of Australia” Jeff said, when asked about his experiences.
A close friend of Jeff and fellow chef enticed him to the sleepy ski village to cook at a local café, known as Eagle Rock which was known as a funky little restaurant with a great atmosphere and exceptional food, beer and wine.
Eagle Rock was so popular in its days, that diners would line up in the street to wait for a table and if there were not enough chairs, they would sit on milk crates.
For four years Jeff ran worked between Eagle Rock in the winter and Coffs Harbour (Australia) during the summer. He sold Eagle Rock and moved to the Chateau Whistler Resort, 90 minutes north of Vancouver where he worked for a couple of years.
On his return to Methven, Jeff took over the Management of Ski Time restaurant in Methven. After 8 years an opportunity to purchase the existing Last Post Café and give it his own flair, with his vast experience in Après Ski dining.
Specialising in upmarket meals, using local quality ingredients and free range meats and eggs, makes The Last Post a choice place to dine.
Gluten free and vegetarian meals are always prominent in the Last Post Café menu. Jeff and the crew take a moral stand on how animals are raised and killed. “Great food comes from the heart”, Jeff said when asked why.
Entering his fourth season of the Last Post Café, Jeff has now partnered with his very good friend, Earl Romero, who manages the front-of-house as the maître d’ ensuring each guest is very well catered for and that their every request is met.
Earl is also an experienced cocktail craftsman – so be sure to ask for your favourite drink when you visit.
Due to popularity and to avoid disappointment, we always recommend bookings at the Last Post Café.
