In the Maori mythology of New Zealand, the North Island was believed to be a fish, with Wellington Harbour at its mouth and the Northland its tail. It is around the ‘tail’ that the Maori population and culture remains strong and the area is home to many significant Maori sites including the Waitangi Treaty House and Cape Reinga. Other attractions include the magnificent Bay of Islands and the ancient kauri rainforests.

Day 1 To Bay of Islands: Collect your hire car in Auckland and drive north to the Bay of Islands, staying in Paihia, Opua or Russell for four nights.

Day 2 Bay of Islands: This morning join a nature cruise on the Bay of Islands, including a visit to the ‘Hole in the Rock’. Evening guided walk into the nearby kauri rainforest in search of the elusive kiwi.

Day 3 Bay of Islands: Day at leisure to explore the area and visit Waitangi Treaty House, the birthplace of modern New Zealand.

Day 4 Northland: Join a full day tour to Northland, including a drive along Ninety Mile beach and a visit to the lighthouse in Cape Reinga.
