Waitangi Treaty House - Bay of Islands

The Waitangi Treaty Grounds is New Zealand’s pre-eminent historic site. It was here on 6 February 1840, that the Treaty of Waitangi was first signed between Maori and the British Crown.

The Treaty House was built for the first British resident, James Busby, and his family and is one of New Zealand’s oldest and most visited historic homes.

Maori Hangi & Concert - Rotorua

Spend an evening at a Maori cultural performance at Mitai in Rotorua. See warriors in traditional dress, witness displays of weaponry and combat coupled with the grace of the poi dance and learn about the significance of their carvings and tattoos.

After the performance you will be invited to dine on the traditionally cooked hangi (a meal cooked in an earth oven).

The East Cape Drive

The East Cape of North Island is a remote and rural region with a strong Maori population and culture.

Those on a self-drive tour may wish to take the Pacific Coast Highway from Whakatane to Gisborne which passes through a series of Maori settlements with beautifully carved Wharenui (meeting houses).

Make time to visit the village of Te Araroa, home to the largest and oldest pohutukawa tree, estimated to be over 600 years old, and a site rich in Maori folklore.

Te Papa Museum of New Zealand - Wellington

Located on the waterfront in Wellington, Te Papa Museum of New Zealand has a permanant area dedicated to Maori history and culture.

With hundreds of artefacts and interactive exhibits, a visit here will give you a deep insight into the history, legends and culture of the Maori people.

Maori Cultural Tour - Kaikoura

Join a Maori family for an insight into Maori spirituality and ways of life.

During the tour you will learn about the Maori history of the Kaikoura area and understand how their traditions and culture shape their relationship with the surrounding environment.
