As any New Zealand hill country farmer will tell you, there is no better way to negotiate the rugged wilderness of this country, than on horseback. Horse trekking is a popular way of seeing places you’ll never see from a car, the magnificent views from the top of a hill, the sweeping panorama of a wilderness beach, the untouched nooks and crannies of a native forest. And while it’s an adventure, there’s also a harmony and quietness with trekking that fits the feel and pace of the landscape.
There’s also something very pleasurable working with horses. Even on a short novice ride, you learn about your horse’s personality and develop a rapport and understanding. The New Zealand equestrian industry is internationally recognized and this extends to breeding horses that are ideal for trekking – reliable, friendly and easy to ride. There are many and different horse riding tours throughout the country. They run half day, full day and overnight treks. All tack, including hard hats is provided and overnight trekking packages also include the necessary camping equipment.
