Freedom Camping in New Zealand
New Zealand is world-renowned for its beautiful scenery and isolated locations, and one of the best ways to enjoy the outdoors is Freedom Camping.

Freedom Camping refers to camping (either in a tent, campervan or motorhome) on public land – for free. To most travellers this is an extremely attractive way to experience (the real) New Zealand.
While there are countless areas of New Zealand that allow Freedom Camping, you have to follow a few basic rules:
- Check the area/region you are in allows Freedom Camping
- Don’t camp or park on private property
- Do not leave rubbish behind
- Be aware of your personal safety, in secluded areas
As well as Freedom Camping, the Department of Conservation also has many cheap (as low as $5 a night) camping areas.
