Hawke’s Bay’s stable climate, bike-friendly terrain and modest average wind speed make it a prime cycling destination. From leisurely vineyard cycle tours to national competitive sporting events, the region has a plethora of options for visitors to enjoy.
Hawke’s Bay welcomes and caters for cyclists of every code and style, be it serious road riders to casual leisure riders. This is why Hawke’s Bay is recognised as the “Cycling Capital of New Zealand”.
Hawke’s Bay already has an extensive network of over 70kms of high quality off-road recreational walkways and cycleways. This network is currently being extended with the addition of two official New Zealand Cycle Trails that will provide a further 65+kms of track for visitors to use.
These world class trails offer a unique cycling experience with an abundance of stunning vistas and relaxing rest stops.
Hawke’s Bay has a fantastic cycling culture and is home to one of New Zealand’s oldest and largest cycling clubs, the Ramblers. The Hawke’s Bay Mountain Biking Club is New Zealand’s largest MTB club, with over 1850 members.
Hawke’s Bay also holds many prominent fixtures ranging from the Kaweka Challenge in the Kaweka Forest Park and the Triple Peaks race, to a fun road ride, The Tour of the Bay, and the Kids Bike jam.
There are also many tourism operators offering a range of cycle trips and tours ranging from single and multiple day packages. A popular option is to cycle around the wine growing areas such as Gimblett Gravels and Ngatarawa Triangle. These routes offer fantastic scenery and have many winery cellar doors dotted along the route for cyclists to enjoy tastings of local food and wine.
