The Motu Trails Cycleway was officially opened in early 2012. With the theme "Set Yourself Free" it certainly is a liberating experience just to be away from road traffic and close to nature. The Opotiki coastal section is accessble from the Opotiki Wharf, cycle beside the scenic Otara river and across the new substantial swing bridge to access the track proper and coast.

The track though sand hills goes for 10km,  but in a couple of places it can be a bit tricky to find where it joins up. A short distance has to be completed on State highway 35 if the tide is in. If the tide is out you can cycle back on the hard sand to add variety to your ride.

Naturally we recommend staying at "The Wharf Hub" when in Opotiki. The cycleway starts outside, bikes can be obtained at half the ususal hire rate and the hospitality is great, plus even in Winter kayaking on the rivers and estaury of Opotiki offers a closeness to nature that also helps to "Set Yourself Free".
