Water sports and activities play a big part in the typical Kiwi summer lifestyle. If you’re thinking of visiting New Zealand be sure to include some water activities in your trip to ensure a true Kiwi experience.
Here are some example of the most unique experiences you can enjoy on New Zealand’s lakes.
Rotorua Duck Tours – Rotorua Lakes District - Rotorua
Rotorua is home to New Zealand’s only tour aboard authentic WWII Landing Crafts. Take a journey on the amphibious Ducks and discover the historic sights, Maori culture, geothermal wonders, and the natural beauty of the stunning Rotorua lakes district.
Rotorua Duck Tours offers two great tour options the Rotorua City & Lakes Tour is an excellent way to learn more about the city of Rotorua, while the Tarawera & Lakes Tour is the perfect choice to see and learn more about the famous Mount Tarawera eruption of 1884.
The perfect family or group activity all year round, tours depart daily from the Rotorua city centre booking office.
TSS Earnslaw - Lake Wakatipu – Queenstown
A unique, and unquestionably one of the best ways to experience Queenstown’s picturesque landscape is aboard the iconic steamship the TSS Earnslaw on Lake Wakatipu. The 90 minute cruise across the lake showcases some of Queenstown’s spectacular alpine scenery while offering you plenty of time to explore a piece of Queenstown’s living history – the 100 year old TSS Earnslaw.
While aboard you also have the opportunity to visit the engine room and see its giant steam engines at work, experience the mini-museum with its collection of historical photos or check out the bridge. For those wanting to simply sit back and relax there is the on-board Promenade Café and Bar where you can enjoy a wine, beer or some café-style food.
Cruises depart regularly throughout the day.
Mine Bay Rock Carvings – Lake Taupo – Taupo
Located on the side of a cliff and only accessible by boat or kayak, the Mine Bay Rock Carvings are a great example of exceptional skill and contemporary Maori art. Created by a local carver over four years, they show a great depiction and respect to the cross cultural and diverse nature of the modern New Zealand population.
The Mine Bay rock carvings can only be reached by water. There are multiple operators such as Ernest Kemp Cruises which offer boat tours daily (except Christmas) or for the more adventurous, tours by kayak are also available.
