GRADE: INTERMEDIATE

Tararua Forest Park is known for its changeable and wild weather.

Pack a picnic basket for a day trip or gear up for a three day hike - this section of the Tararua Forest Park has something for everyone.

Holdsworth is the main entrance to the Tararua Forest Park. The picturesque Atiwhakatu stream passes through the area, creating a lovely environment for picnics.

From here you can hike to the summit of Mount Holdsworth, a 1470 metre peak. The track climbs beyond the forest up to the tussock highlands. Your effort is rewarded with expansive views of Wairarapa farmland and the rugged interior of the Tararua Range. This hike takes a full day, but is achievable for anybody of moderate fitness.

A real treat for seasoned wilderness hikers is the Holdsworth Jumbo circuit - a two to three day adventure that involves travelling along the tussock-covered tops of the Tararua Ranges.
