About

“Wairere Boulders” near Horeke is a Nature Park created by Rita and Felix Schaad, in their part of the Wairere valley. There is an agglomeration of hundreds (if not thousands) of huge basalt blocks covering an area which is 1800 m long and can reach a width of around 250 m. The valley is not only of geomorphic interest and stunning to view, but also the weathering on the basalt surface shows flutings or lapiez and solution pits of outstanding size and beauty.
Easy walking tracks lead over 25 bridges, ramps, stairs and steps up to a platform to enjoy the view over the Wairere valley.
Routes can be chosen on the way. Slow walking times are between 40 minutes to 2 hours.
