Devonport in my opinion (perhaps I'm biased, I've lived here for 31 years) is the jewel in Auckland's crown. Located on Auckland's North Shore, Devonport is at the end of a peninsular that forms the northern side of the Waitemata Harbour. To the east a volcano forming the head land Maungauika /North Head guards the mouth of the harbour and is sacred to the local Maori iwi having been a Pa site (a fortified village) where the Maori people lived .
Why Visit Devonport?
We have it all, awesome views from the summit of our volcanic cones, great swimming beaches, excellent shopping, restaurants, bike trails, walking tours, interesting museums, a relaxing library, children's playground, stunning Victorian architecture and it's home to the N.Z. Navy. There's plenty of built and natural history here to explore as you climb, or Segway to the top of volcanic cones and explore Auckland's Military history.
How to get here
The most convenient way to get here is on a Fullers Ferry. It only takes 12 minutes from the downtown Auckland ferry terminal. The ferries run every ½ hour all day till late at night.
If you're driving, come over the harbour bridge and take the Esmonde Road Takapuna /Devonport turn - off and follow the signs to Devonport. It will take you approx 45 minutes from downtown Auckland depending on traffic.
Come for "A Taste of Segway" it's a great treat for family and friends. You'll have plenty of FUN experiencing something totally new and exciting and you'll enjoy the sights of Devonport. In the summer time, bring your sun cream, towel and bathing suit and be prepared to spend the day in Devonport soaking up the atmosphere.
