Did you know that Ruapehu currently ROCKS?!! No, there aren’t rocks everywhere, in fact quite the opposite. The snow cover is fantastic and the mountain is in great condition for spring riding.
Every time I check Mt Ruapehu’s website or Facebook page, they’re plastered with drool-worthy photos of the snow and riders having a blast on the slopes. They’ve had perfect conditions over the last week at both Whakapapa and Turoa, with silky smooth spring snow and blue sky days. If you’ve been procrastinating over that trip to the snow all winter, then now is the time to seize the day and high-tail it up there!
Whakapapa Ski Club Lodge Accommodation
Something I’ve wanted to do all winter is go and stay in one of the club lodges up on the slopes of Whakapapa. There is a myriad of different lodges dotted around the lower slopes and at the Top of the Bruce, and most of them welcome guests who are not club members.
Accommodation is usually bunkroom style, bathrooms are shared and you’ll probably be expected to take your turn at cooking and cleaning up. Doing that stuff is all part of the fun and it's a great way to experience mountain life amongst some of the die-hard characters who’ve been frequenting the slopes for years.

Whakapapa Oversnow Shuttle Service
One thing that’s always put me off staying in a club lodge is the idea of arriving at the mountain late on a Friday night then having to lug gear up a snowy slope to the lodge in the dark. Well, not anymore!
Whakapapa’s new over snow taxi service solves this problem and makes it much easier to get the kids and grandparents up to the lodge as well. The Oversnow Shuttle service runs from the Top of the Bruce to all club lodges with ski in and out access on the slopes above. You’ll ride in a purpose built, covered in cabin and arrive safely at your lodge without feeling exhausted! Can you imagine how much fun the kids would have riding in a groomer?
The service operates on Friday, Saturday and Sunday nights from 5pm till midnight, and from Monday – Thursday on request from 5pm till midnight with 24 hours notice required. Bookings can be made by calling (07) 892 4000 during office hours Monday - Sunday, or by emailing firstname.lastname@example.org
So that’s what’s happening up at Whakapapa right now. There’s some fantastic spring riding to be had and the weather will be more settled now that spring has arrived. Get on up there, carve up some turns and have a blast!
