Bay of Plenty for Children

For many New Zealanders summer conjures up memories of time spent in the Bay Of Plenty region

As a Child I remember exploring the spectacular beaches, endless hours of boogie boarding and fun time with family and freinds.  Only 2 ½ hours by car from Auckland – I decide to take my grandchild to ‘The Bay’.

Heading towards the coast past Waihi township, you can instantly feel that wonderful relaxed sensation start to envelop you…it’s the perfect time to start discussing what the kids want to do first.
Hairy Maclary statues are on the list.  Built on The Strand in Tauranga city, it is fascinating to watch as the children climb over the animal sculptures, and people of all ages discuss their favourite story character.

For the big kids surfing lessons at Mount Maunganui Beach, voted #1 Beach in New Zealand on trip advisor, is definitely on their hit list.  There is also kayaking for all levels of experience on offer at a variety of locations around the harbour,  which makes for a great family activity when you have a range of age groups.  At twilight you can kayak on Lake McLaren the only place that combines kayaking and glow worm sightseeing for a magical and
truly unique experience.

The littlies will love a trip out to Mossops honey shop on State Highway 29 in Tauriko, to look and learn about bees activities in the hive and how honey is made. Mossops is a family run business that has been going for over 65 years and become renown for it’s unique ‘hive to honey pot processing’.  Don’t leave before they have a large ice cream, and mum has purchased natural skin care and health products along with pots of nourishing Manuka honey.

“Mauao” - a dormant volcano at the top of the peninsula - stands challenging the whole family. For the not so active there is a lovely walk around the base, where at times you will see seals playing in the rock pools. Those that elect to climb to the top will gain a magnificent view of the harbour, beach and the Pacific Ocean. This time we elect to take the base walk, which on this occasion looks more like a Hollywood red-carpet given it’s shrouded in stunning soft red Pohutukawa flower needles.

No matter what time of the year, definitely pack your togs. When the weather is hot there are kilometers of sandy spectacular beach and if the weather turns cold, you can venture to Cambridge Road in Bethlehem to relax in Fernland’s hot mineral pools. Whether you play in the main pool or book your own private pool the whole family will benefit from soaking in 100% pure soda, crystal clear non-chlorinated mineral water.

After a day full of activities return to Trinity Wharf Hotel, uniquely situated on and over the water - a home away from home - we have booked the three bedroomed apartment with a fully equipped kitchen and stunning views over the water. After feeding the children and arranging a babysitter the adults head down for a relaxing dinner at Trinity's Halo Restaurant - end of a perfect day...... For more information see
