Rotorua has been ranked by Red Bull as having the best mountain bike tracks in the Southern Hemisphere, and ranked in the top 8 spots for mountain biking globally. There are downhill tracks, shuttle bus tours, and gondola only accessed mountain bike tracks down Mount Ngongotaha. Rotorua has played host to many Mountain Biking events over the years, including the World Mountain Biking Champs in 2006. Crankworx is expected to bring thousands to the city, with over 750 riders and many more visitors in the way of supporters and media.
For those looking to explore Rotorua is also on the cycle trail - Te Ara Ahi. This is a cycle trail for beginner to intermediate riders cycle trail heading south from Rotorua towards Taupo. The trail starts at The Government Gardens, and travels past iconic attractions including Te Puia (the New Zealand Maori Arts and Crafts Institute), Waimangu Volcanic Valley, Waiotapu Geothermal Park, Kerosene Creek, Waikite Hot Pools, and ends at Orakei Korako. Finish off the trail with a soak in the hot pools before getting a shuttle back to Rotorua (or cycling back if you are keen).
For the non-bikers there are plenty of options of things to do in Rotorua, from conservation flying fox tours with Rotorua Canopy Tours, relaxing at the award winning Polynesian Spa, or visiting the lakes the region is famous for. Lake Tarawera, Lake Rotoiti, and Lake Tikitapu (The Blue Lake) are all within a 15 minute drive of Rotorua. Take a tour of the city and experience the stunning scenery of the lakes with Rotorua Duck Tours aboard an amphibious WWII vehicle.
Rotorua also has a developing foodie scene, with great coffee and excellent choices of places to eat. Some of the favourites are Urbano Bistro on Fenton Street, Capers, Wild Rice, Leonardo’s and Indian Star.There is also a newly developed dining precinct with plenty of outdoor seating called Eat Streat, including Brew Bar with their award winning craft beer label Crouchers. If in the vicinity of Skyline for Crankworx, Volcanic Hills makes wine right here on the edge of Mount Ngongotaha, and have a tasting room at the top of the gondolas - not to be missed! You can even buy a bottle or two as a souvenir from your visit.
